Interpreting is the oral transfer of messages expressed in one language into another. Two major modes can be found here: Simultaneous and consecutive interpreting.
1.- Simultaneous interpreting: In this mode, interpreters convey messages as the speaker gives the speech. This type of interpreting is usually used in conferences, symposiums, talks, training courses and any type of events that require simultaneity. For this mode of interpreting technical equipment is necessary for the speaker, the interpreter and the audience. Costs are associated to the event duration. It may be half day (up to 4 hours) or full day (form 4 to 8 hours).
2.- Consecutive interpreting: Once the speaker gives a 1 or 2-minute speech, the interpreter translate it into the desired language. Most of the times, only one interpreter is needed.
This mode of interpreting is especially efficient in activities such as training courses for small groups, press conferences, business meetings and escorted tours among others. Technical equipment is not regularly needed in consecutive interpreting.
Like consecutive interpreting, costs are based on the event duration.
Technical equipment is not regularly used in this mode of interpreting.
Translation is the transfer of a text written in a given language into another. Articles, books, journals, contracts, technical manuals are some of the texts that need to be translated.
The cost of a translation is based on the amount of words and it varies according to the languages involved. Sometimes, depending on the urgency of this requirement, a rush fee may be applied.
Technical equipment is closely related to interpreting tasks, particularly simultaneous interpreting. This equipment consists of:
Interpreting booth: This is simultaneous interpreters’ workplace. From here, they send messages to the audience. The booth is fitted with earphones and microphones and its purpose is to isolate the exterior noise so that interpreters work in proper conditions.
*** Portable transmitters and receivers: When the audience has no more than 20 individuals and room conditions are not adequate to place a booth, portable devices are the best option. These devices are transmitters and receivers for the speaker, audience and interpreters.
